Information about BOLTON Bolton was, like many northern towns, built entirely on the textile industry. Records show that this began as far back as 1337. Later, fabric production was revolutionised with the invention of the spinning mule by Samuel Crompton of Bolton in 1779. This allowed the town to become an important centre of the industry, until its demise in the early 20th century. His home, Hall i'th' Wood is an attractive, part-timbered, late medieval merchant's house dating from 1530 to 1648. The Hall is furnished with 17th and 18th century furniture and also includes pictures, ceramics and local history items. Of course, it is easy to see the effect the industry has had on the town even today, with many mills having been preserved or converted alongside the redevelopment taking place throughout the town. Entertainment in the town is provided by the various theatres and cultural centres, but the source of most pride is the football team, Bolton Wanderers, perhaps the most successful team in the country for a town of Bolton�s size.
